SUmBA - Writing as a Strategy to Cope with Stress in Daily Life

The study was carried out by: MSc. Catherine Irniger, Dipl.-Psych. Savion Hesse, Prof. Dr. Birgit Watzke

The aim of the SUmBA study is to investigate how people deal with stress in their daily lives and how a diary-like writing task is related with these processes. We want to learn more about these processes and what effect the writing task has on the subjective well-being during the course of one week.

Course of the study:

  1. At the first day of the study the participants fill out an online questionnaire. This takes about 30 minutes and should enable an insight into the current life situation. Afterwards, they get informed about the next steps via e-mail.
  2. In the following week some of the participants are asked to carry out an online writing task of about 10 minutes on four of the seven subsequent days. They get instructed to write about the most important topic of the day. Some of the participants additionally or instead are asked to answer a few questions over the course of the day on their smartphones. This takes approximately 5 minutes a day.
  3. After one week all participants get access to the second and final online questionnaire. This questionnaire should enable an insight how they’ve experienced the time in between and again takes about 30 minutes.
  4. At the end of the second questionnaire the participants can choose if they want to participate in a raffle of 10 vouchers (Migros) worth 40 CHF or receive the confirmation of 2.5 proband hours.

Overall, the study participation takes up to 2.5 hours over a period of 9 to 10 days. The participants who are not asked to carry out the writing task within this period of time have the possibility to do the task after the second questionnaire, if they so wish. This takes another 7 to 8 days.

How to participate?

The study was completed on 12.05.2019 and, therefore, the participation is no longer possible. The winners of the raffle have been contacted per e-mail.
